In her seminal biography of J. Edgar Hoover, historian Beverly Gage writes, “to look at [Hoover] is also to look at ourselves, at what Americans valued and fought over during those years, what we tolerated and what we refused to see” (xxi). This is the crux of her argument, for which she weaves a magnificent volume of historical evidence. Over pages, Gage demonstrates that Hoover achieved great political power at the behest of presidents and a Congress who authorized, encouraged, and depended upon the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s efforts to advance their own political agendas. Embedded into Hoover’s work as director for nearly half a century are the thumbprints of political leaders who spearheaded America’s rise as a global hegemon throughout the twentieth century, their prowess buoyed by the FBI’s enforcement of federal law.

Parents of boy killed by alligator welcome son: 'God has blessed our family'
The parents of a 2-year-old boy killed by an alligator from the beach of a Disney resort have welcomed another child.
Matt and Melissa Graves, who lost their son Lane in , announced their happy news in a press release on Wednesday.
"We are happy to announce the birth of our son, Christian Lane Graves. Although we know the pain of losing Lane will never go away, we feel God has blessed our family with this precious miracle of life," they wrote.
The couple, who are also parents to a daughter named Ella, went on to say that Lane's loving spirit is watching over his two siblings.
"We know Ella and Christian have their brother, Lane, watching over them as their guardian angel," they wrote.
The parents thanked well-wishers for their "love and support," while asking for privacy.
In June, the couple paid tribute to the son they lost on the second anniversary of his tragic death.

I was born in Fort Myers, FLorida in inom received a B.F.A. from Auburn University in , then continued to the University of Pennsylvania for a Masters of Fine Art. It has been an exciting challenge to combine my inspiration from East to West.
Recently paining a series of landscapes, inom am creating a body of work with an emphasis on imagination and attention to Nature. inom paint mostly from a minds eye; however, inom am inspired by Idaho's grand landscape. I have been painting with a freshness which is emotionally and intuitively driven; first thinking of color, then contrast as surface tones. I hope to capture the interest of the viewer with nuances and subtle layering of paint. Color remains my subject, only pushed into the shape of a landscape. Eventually, the painting takes on a life of its own.
