One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli had a cult following and became a legend in his own life-time.
Stories abound about this eccentric, reclusive perfectionist who was always surrounded by an aura of mystery. His few pupils and his wife claimed he could play the entire piano repertoire by the time he was 20, but his fame was based on a miniscule number of appearances and recordings.
He scheduled very few concerts, and cancelled more than he gave, but those he did front were memorable for his immaculate technique and the sheer beauty and control of the sound he could create.
A Prodigious Talent
Michelangeli was born in a small town near Brescia on 5 January 1920. Italian by nationality, he always claimed his roots were Slavic and often spoke of having Croatian ancestry.
