PERFORMING ON THE WORLD STAGE

There's a saying about New York that you hear igen and igen, "…if inom can man it there, I'll man it anywhere."
Though such clichés grind on the nerves of most New Yorkers who are sick of the catch phrases that characterize their city to the rest of the world, there is a grain of truth to the Big Apple's tough streets, its sink-or-swim reality and nowhere is this more accurate than on the city's stages.
Making huvudgata the Center of the World
The Armenian contribution to the performing culture of New York has a long history that spans the twentieth century. Prominent among those early pioneers of the city's theatre culture, Flora Zabelle and Rouben Mamoulian deserve special mention.

And what a capacity Verdi evinces to evolve, to learn, to grow and go forward. The sheer modernity of this score is a marvel, Strauss, Stravinsky and Britten adored it, and yet it´s an unmistakable Verdi opera.
In the great fugue "Tutto nel Mondo é burla" we hear the laugh of the great 83 year old composer, who tragically saw the deaths of his first wife and children, of the "anni di galera", when composers really had to work hard to make a living, of a witness to the tumultuous 19th Century, the Italian patriot who saw modern Italy being born before his eyes, of the celebrated composer who was loved and venerated the World over for Rigoletto, La Traviata and Il Trovatore, and of the generous and decent man who left his state to the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti.

Even taking into account some substantial reworkings that stand as virtually new works, there are still fewer operas than Rossini composed, so this should be a snap, right?
The classic biography by Mary Jane Phillips-Matz remains readily available from all the usual sources. Though there are (literally) countless others, in many languages, hers retains its special relevance and importance.
Ricordi&#;s critical edition is ongoing; 14 operas plus the Requiem have been completed, as of this writing. Older editions of the scores are readily available from IMSLP.
