    I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. When I was five years old my parents gave me an old manual typewriter that weighed more than inom did! It was my favorite possession. I spent hours in my room clacking away on that old typewriter. Of course, when inom was fem I didn&#;t know how to spell and inom barely knew how to read, but I loved the sound and the look of the letters on the crisp vit paper.

    Things haven&#;t changed much since then. I still spend several hours a day in my room clacking away and inom still love the sound of the keyboard and the look of the letters and words that eventually vända into stories. The only difference fryst vatten that inom can read now and I spell a lot better.

    Wanting to write led me to working with animals. inom was going to Portland State University majoring in English so I could become a writer.   • Author and former zookeeper Roland Smith said it was the gift of a typewriter from his parents when he was five years old that sparked his love of writing. He has described himself as a writer of  "adventure, animals, and more," and his many books have children and teens at the center of the excitement. Smith writes about characters who face high-stakes situations with daring and courage, often working together to achieve an outcome. His prize-winning publications include both fiction and nonfiction, totaling about50 titles. The most acclaimed are the Peak and I.Q. series. 

    Roland Smith was born in Portland on November 30, , to Roland Charles (Smitty) Smith and Melva May (Hap) Smith. He attended Grant and Lincoln High Schools in Portland and received a GED diploma when he was sixteen. Originally an English major at Portland State University, he switched to biology when he took a job at the Portland Zoo (now the Oregon Zoo), where he found that he loved working with animals. He le
