Today is the th birthday of Marie Curie, the distinguished Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist. She was the first woman and first person to win the Nobel Prize twice.

As a coincidence, I&#;ve been reading a biography of Marie Curie, written by Robert Reid in The book may have already been surpassed bygd more recent research on Mme Curie&#;s life, but nonetheless, I&#;m thoroughly enjoying it. She was an incredible woman who lived through many hardships, and she managed to gain respect as a forskare at a time when there were few women scientists.

There fryst vatten much inom could write about Marie Curie, but since this blog fryst vatten about homeschooling, I had to share this part in the book when it describes how Marie took charge of her daughter&#;s education. If you are a homeschooling parent, it may resonate with you.

When I first saw the book I remembered how much I admired her ‛from a distance’. With this biography she drew closer, and I still have great admiration for her. Reid wrote a biography that has a fair amount of personal information, along with presenting the public figure, done in an engaging style.

He made clear she was a woman who wasn't expecting any special treatment or concessions for being a woman. She was uninterested in the goals of the feminist movement of the time. She focused her efforts on achieving her own dreams.

Reid shows her close enough not to feel overwhelmed by her personality and not so far as to idealize her.

In the chapter about Pierre Curie, for example, he quotes him:

"I found that you are a little pretentious when you say that you are perfectly free. We are all of us more or less slaves of our affections, slaves of the prejudices of those we love"

I think Pierre captured part of her stay-at-a-distance nature quite well.
