    Shimon showed tremendous artistic promise from an early age. He was accepted into the celebrated Odessa Art Academy in 1970, when he was only 19, and he graduated three years later with a BFA. Okshteyn started to exhibit his work in 1972 while still a student.
    In painting, drawing, sculpture he seeks to fix the artifacts of time. The first series of paintings «Cover girls» (1984) depicts smiling fatal beauties, as if composed of polished geometric shapes. In 1995 - 2010, Okshteyn refers to the canvases of old masters in still life, adding modern objects to them. Works are in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum.

    Curated by Tatyana Okshteyn, founder of Black & White Gallery/Project Space, the show is hosted at the Southampton, Long Island studio of her late husband, Shimon Okshteyn.

    Okshteyn's still-lifes—objects whose life has been stilled—not only explore the boundary between ordinary objects and poetic objects—non-art and found art—but between aesthetics and erotics.
