Sargy Mann
Sargy Mann was born Martin Oliver Henson Mann in Hythe, Kent, England on 29 May He was educated at Dartington School in Devon (–53), where he acquired his lifelong nickname 'Sargy', and Oxford Technical College (–58), before training at Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts (–64), where his tutors included Frank Auerbach, Euan Uglow and Dick Lee; he also recalled drawing ‘kind of unofficially’ in the life room at St. Martin’s where Leon Kossoff was teaching in the late s. In he returned to Camberwell as a postgraduate student, and then as a part-time teacher (–88), also teaching at the Camden Arts Centre throughout the same period. He was deeply influenced by the post-Impressionists and his work celebrated light and colour. The opening minutes of Peter Mann’s wonderful film about his late father, the artist Sargy Mann, are something of an emotional rollercoaster. Opening on a black screen, we hear a recording of Sargy’s gentle, otherworldly voice confirm that it is 30 May and today marks “the end of vision”. His eyesight had been deteriorating for more than 30 years, following cataracts and retinal detachments, and he had awoken to experience total blindness for the very first time. “I presume I won’t be painting any more pictures,” he says, seemingly in a state of shock.
