Chapter 4 Keeper of Secrets, Noble Highness: the Journey of the Mavrocordatos Family from a Borderland Perspective
Abstract
Nicolas Mavrocordatos (1670–1730) was a prominent member of the Phanariot aristocracy, who served as Grand Dragoman of the Imperial Council and then Voyvoda of Moldavia and Wallachia. Using his life as a case study, this paper aims to investigate the Ottoman Empire’s approach to its European borderlands, explore the role of the Phanariots as a centrally appointed border elite, and cast light on the ways in which Nicolas and his family manipulated their identities to fill a variety of political roles. Building on a large body of scholarship on Ottoman dragomans and the Phanariots, this paper takes a closer look at Nicolas’ book Philotheou Parerga (The Leisures of Philotheos). It argues that during the eighteenth century, a novel political culture, the cultural extroversion of the Tulip Era, and newfound anxieties over the empire’s Europ
