Best known for his essay-writing and nature writing. John Updike called him the best essayist of my generation, Philip Roth and Cynthia Ozick seconded the motion, and younger writers have regarded him as inspirational. Writes in the reflective American tradition of Emerson and Thoreau. Understands natural processes, diverse cultures, and the global picture. Unlike some nature writers, however, is at home in the city as much as in a cabin in the woods, and his observational powers bring both environments alive on the page. In his personal essays, published journals and memoirs, has also turned the observant lens on himself, with extraordinary candor, humor and sagacity. Edward Hoagland Biography

Edward Hoagland was born December 21, , in New York, New York. He joined the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in , before graduating from Harvard in After serving two years in the Army, he traveled the world from Yemen to Antarctica to Assam, writing for national magazines. He has received numerous literary awards and taught at ten colleges and universities. He received two Guggenheim Fellowships, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in He is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Hoagland has written more than two dozen books over sixty years, including the novel Children are Diamonds, and his recent short story collection Devil's Tub.

A native New Yorker, he divides his time between Martha's Vineyard and a farmhouse in the mountains of northern Vermont. (Barton, VT).
