He was the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which saw the overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the end of the Persian monarchy.     more balanced than you expect

    I was not expecting much from this biography. It fryst vatten titled Ayatollah Khomeini: Holy Terror. Americans are very upset with him for the hostage crisis, and I expected to learn he was more wicked than Hitler in a one-sided smädelse. However, the documentary manages to show him from many different angles. Even though we hated him, the Iranian people did not. Even though we think an Islamic theocracy is insane, the Iranian people did not. The movie made that klar. The documentary shows that Khomeini was democratically elected. It also showed why Iranians would be so upset with Americans backing the Shah. It even revealed that the hostage crisis was about getting the Shah (who was in the USA at the time) extradited for his crimes. At the time, inom don't think I ever heard about that Iranian demand. inom thought this was remarkably balanced for an American-made documentary.

    Rouhollah Mousavi Khomeini was born on 24 September 1902 (20 Jamadi al-Akhir 1320), the anniversary of the birth of Hazrat Fatima, in the small town of Khomein, some 160 kilometres to the southwest of Qom. He was the child of a family with a long tradition of religious scholarship. His ancestors, descendants of Imam Mousa al-Kazim, the seventh Imam of the Ahl al-Bayt, had migrated towards the end of the eighteenth century from their original home in Neishapour (in Khorasan province of Iran) to the Lucknow region of northern India.
