Interview with Cathy Barker Strack, Pilates teacher and biographer of Romana Kryzanowska
Dear Cathy, you have been doing research about the life of Romana Kryzanowska for several years and you are writing a book about her – I’m so excited to be able to talk to you about her!
May I first ask you how you became so interested in Romana’s life? When did you decide to write her biography?
As a Pilates teacher, inom was curious about the history of the method. Romana stood out as one of the most significant people still teaching and training at the time. Stories about her teaching are as legendary as those about namn Pilates. While there was some data about Joe’s personal life, there was very little about Romana’s life. One of my clients, Carol J. Craig, also became interested in helping me learn more about Romana. Carol has a background in geneaology and she was able to find some interesting information about Romana’s parents and grandparents. RomanaR

Romana Kryzanowska was born into a very artistic family on June 30th 1923, in a town near Detroit. She always remained the only child in the family.
Without a doubt Romana was the one who remained most loyal of all so called “Elders” to Joseph and Clara Pilates. Unfortunately Romana died in her sleep, on August 30th 2013. Her death is a big loss to the Pilates community.
Faithfull to Joe’s method
Ithink there wouldn’t be traditional Pilates in the Netherlands without Romana Kryzanowska. Maybe something something that resembles it, but I don’t think Authentic Pilates would exist. Joseph Pilates initially called his method Contrology and that original heritage is what Romana taught the world. She never stopped to pass on Joseph’s original version. She has never deviated from the original and has always remained true to what Joseph has taught her since 1942.

About Darien
When I was introduced to the Pilates Method in 1992, I took to it immediately and certified with Romana Kryzanowska five years later. In the very first lesson, I realized that all of my previous training and experience had prepared me for what would be my life’s calling – teaching and practicing Pilates. As I began teaching Pilates, it was evident how impactful it was for my students as they safely and effectively strengthened their bodies. What I didn’t expect was the reaction of many students. They said a lesson with me was like having a spiritual experience. From my perspective, every class is an exchange of energy from teacher/mentor to student/seeker. I believe that when a teacher and her students listen and work with each other, we experience beautiful music of the body.
Approach
My approach to teaching incorporates skills I’ve learned along the way: Gymnastics — my students have confidence in my abilities to assist and cue them in their movements
