Arthur Conan Doyle
The Conan Doyle Estate Ltd consists of eight people, all but one of whom are the beneficiaries of the will of Dame jean Conan Doyle, the youngest child of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Most of us are relations of Sir Arthur, by marriage or blood.
We originally set up the company to manage the literary, merchandising, and advertising rights in Conan Doyle’s works and characters, including Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Professor Challenger. We own United States copyrights in the works still under copyright protection in the U.S.A. and also own U.S. trademark and common lag rights in the name and image of Sherlock Holmes and several other Conan Doyle characters.
However, our mission now is much broader. Everyone has heard of Sherlock Holmes but few know much about his creator. Conan Doyle's life
Arthur Conan Doyle was eldest son of 9 siblings, of whom 7 made it to adulthod. After graduating as Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, he practiced as a GP until he found fame as the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
A keen sportsman, his other interests included the search for justice, notably in the cases of George Edalji and Oscar Slater, and Spiritualism.
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22nd 1859. He described his early years as ‘happy,’ spending his days acting out historical adventures and battles, or endlessly pestering his mother and father with questions about science, history, and books.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born 22nd May 1859 in Edinburgh to parents Charles and Mary Doyle. His was a straightforward childhood spent playing and fighting on the streets of Edinburgh. When not out roaming with his friends, Arthur could be found curled up with a book at home, usually borrowed from the local circulating library.
Arthur also grew up in the company of artists. His father Charles was a painter and illustrator and Charles’s brother, Arthur’s Uncle Dickie was a more famous illustrator for Punch magazine, creating the famous Punch and Judy logo for the front cover of the magazine. Charles himself was a functioning alcoholic who worked as an architectural draftsman for Scotland’s clerk of works, Robert Matheson. Unfortunately, his love of drink overtook his love of illustration, and he was retired from his position with a small pension at the age of 44. Later, as his mental health broke down, he agreed to move away and stay in a home for alcoholics.
