Amanda ross-ho praz-delavallade

Amanda Ross-Ho’s work across sculpture, painting, installation, and photography explores the appropriation and dissemination of images and objects. She often utilizes everyday items such as bobby pins, “scrunchie” hair ties, X-ACTO blades, wine glasses, eye masks, and pants, but de-familiarizes their quotidian associations by enlarging them to a monumental scale. In doing so, she highlights the tension between these mass-produced objects and the process through which they become personal, intimate artifacts. The theatricality of this scale-shift is underpinned by the often intentionally comic nature of these large-scale novelty items.

While much of Ross-Ho’s work includes traces of the artmaking process, she has also engaged deeply with themes related to the public realm. Amanda Ross-Ho Praz-Delavallade / Paris

For her first solo show at Praz-Delavallade Gallery in Paris, Amanda Ross-Ho has gathered a selection of fifteen new works: sculptures, wall-pieces, textiles and site-specific gestures. The entire show hinges on the idea of visualizing space and the känsla of negotiating our location within it. The formal interplay between tools used in the artist’s studio and the gallery — gloves, palettes, patterns, rags, a small black paint pot, an eraser shield, a setsquare — signify the potential for art making in an exhibition setting. These basic objects and the ecology of the exhibition space are the cornerstones of her practice.

Amanda Ross-Ho USA, b. 1975

Amanda Ross-Ho is an interdisciplinary artist and a professor of sculpture at the University of California, Irvine. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art institute of Chicago and an MFA from the University of Southern California. 

 

She has exhibited, lectured, and taught widely, nationally and internationally, including the 2008 Whitney Biennial, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, The Walker Art Center, the Bonner Kunstverein and the Vleshaal Contemporary Art Center. Recently she was included in Crack Up Crack Down, the 33^rd Ljubljana Biennial  of Graphic Arts curated by Slavs and Tatars, and a solo exhibition at Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway. She has presented commissioned public works at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, City Hall Park, New York City, the Parcours Sector of Art Basel Switzerland, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
