Allen Smith Jr. (, Rhode Island - , Cleveland, Ohio) was an American portrait painter. He also created some landscapes and genre scenes.
Biography
[edit]He grew up in Massachusetts. Later, he went to New York, where he studied with the miniaturist, William Daniel Parisen (), while attending antique classes at the American Academy of the Fine Arts. He attended similar classes at the National Academy of Design and continued to exhibit there occasionally from to He was an Associate Member until [1]
In , he joined his parents in Detroit. Three years later, he was in Cincinnati, then returned to New York for a short time, finally settling in Cleveland sometime around [1] He soon established himself as a popular portrait painter. SMITH, ALLEN, JR. ( Sept. ), portrait and landscape painter, was born in Dighton, Mass., to Allen and Lydia (Wardwell) Smith. He worked in Detroit for 6 years before moving to Cleveland in , where he practiced for over 40 years. Smith embarked on his artistic career as a youth by copying prints and drawings. His first practical experience as a painter was working in the scene-painting department of the Bowery Theater. His formal academic training came while he was a student at the Natl. Academy. In , Smith moved to Detroit; in , he moved to Cleveland. While there he painted some of his most famous portraits: Gov. Tod of Ohio, Gov. Fairchild of Wisconsin, and the presidents of Western Reserve (see CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY) and Kenyon colleges. He also painted LEONARD CASE, JR.'s, formal portrait. In , he won an Art Union Prize for his portrait entitled Young Mechanic.
